Music & Work

Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career... ( from "Trainspotting" movie , 1996 )

Most of us have a job, have a work to do. Some are studying . Sometimes we read or do some other stuff. The main problem of 21th century is our technology advantage. The thing, that was meant to simplify our life is making our life tougher. And that is the reality. Let me get to the point - we are getting distracted by lots of things - cellphones, IM ( Instant messaging )  and noise at the office. I am not the first one to admit it ( Find just same idea at "Rework" by 37 signals & GTD - Getting Things Done by David Allen ). There are lots of ways to fight the "distraction" but i'd love to speak about music .

Music is God's gift to man, the only art of Heaven given to earth, the only art of earth we take to Heaven.

Most of my worktime ( routine ) i have coding & designs. That's my job. My passion is mix of advertising & technology. That's why i do e-branding ( web branding & advertising ). Work routine is lots of emails , calls and sometimes IM. I'm not the guy , who is answering the phone with the hell of phrase " Good day , how can i help you ? ". I've got a rule of 10 calls , have wroten about it before ( need to re-write it someday ). 10 calls per worktime, not more. It' really enough. I don't buy fancy mouses & earphones. No matter the price , both break down after couple of months.
I love music. Most music , that i like is distracting from work. Neither Scandinavian metal & female fronted melodic death metal , neither minimal techno help to concentrate on work. First on is very powerfull & fast, second is flooded with heavy basses & high tones. ( Yes, there is great solution - listen to white or brown noise ( http://bit.ly/dNblym ) in noise canceling (reducing) headphones ( http://amzn.to/fVNDGl ) )

It took me months to find a great background music for coding. So i went to searching & asking other people on their preferences. I asked people from big IT-communities like stackoverflow( & stack exchange ) ,reddit , habrahabr, news.ycombinator.com , aardvark ( vark.com ) & quora ( also googled  for some forum-threads ) .I have received more, than 250 answers and anazlyzed the answers to make a chart :

Chart1

Chart notes:
1. Silence means no music at all
2. IMHO, ambient & instrumental music are very similar genres , but i deiced to separate them
3. Most soundtracks are instrumental , but there are lots of mixed-genres
4. Don't ask me why jazz & classical music are in one row
5. There are some answers, that get less than 5 votes - ethnic , 80's , reggae , hip-hop.

About 8% of participated told, that listen to foreign music , just because they don't understand the lyrics.
Adding this, about 85% prefer to listen music online ( grooveshark , pandora, di.fm , soma.fm , last.fm ). Some people have home servers with streaming . I found only 3 persons using ipad\zune while coding.

I like Japanese ethnic & some sountracks ( like Matrix Trilogy , Social network , Firefly ) for backround music. Sometimes Balkan Beat Box
